How to Eat with Proteinuria Caused by Kidney Disease

1. Sodium Intake
We recommend limiting the daily consumption of salt to 5-6g. Patients with proteinuria caused by kidney disease should control the intake of salt and alkali. Generally, it’s appropriate to have salt of less than 2g every day. Patients should not have pickled food, and eat less monosodium glutamate and alkali. But long-term salt-free diet can appear the symptoms such as weak, dizziness etc. When plasma protein level turned to normal, the patients can have normal diet.
2. Potassium intake
When the potassium level increased, and urine volume is less than 1000 ml/day, the patients shall generally have the potassium of no exceed 1700 mg. The amount of potassium in the food should be less than 1500 mg/day. If potassium level is below normal status and the urine volume more than 1500 ml/day, the patients must take into consideration of potassium supplement.
3. Fat intake
The patients should limit the intake of animal internal organs, fat, some seafood and other foods that are rich in cholesterol and fat. Some people found recently in food supplement of polyene unsaturated fatty acids, such as fish oil can reduce kidney disease patients with proteinuria and improve renal function.
4. The diet should be light
Due to the loss of protein, the patients’ plasma colloid osmotic pressure is reduced. Under such a condition, water seep into the surrounding tissues, and this is often accompanied by gastrointestinal mucosal edema and ascites. It affects the digestion and absorption. Therefore, the patients can have light and digestible food. While the daily amount of vegetable oil can not be more than 10 ml.
