What is the preventative diet to follow with stage 4 kidney failure? Daily diet needs to be arranged well when there is stage 4 kidney failure, as some foods do harm to our kidneys. Well then, what foods we should eat and avoid with stage 4 kidney failure?
1. Foods with high quality protein are suggested
A low-protein diet is always needed when kidney function is impaired. The metabolic product of protein is urea nitrogen which needs to be discharged out of our body through kidney. Therefore, high protein diet will add further burden on kidney. For stage 4 kidney failure patients, they need to ingest 0.4 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. Besides, 60% of the protein they eat should be high quality protein which can be found in lean meat, fish, egg white and milk.
2. High carbohydrate foods are recommended
High carbohydrate foods can provide our body with energy. When there is no enough energy in our body, protein will be metabolized to support our body. Therefore, eating some high carbohydrate foods helps to reduce consumption of protien.
3. Follow a low-salt diet
Salt is rich in sodium and a high sodium consumption will cause worsening of high blood pressure and fluid retention.
4. Regulate potassium and phosphorus intake according to lab test
High potassium level and high phosphorus level are very common among stage 4 kidney failure patients. Hyperkalemia is very harmful for our heart and may cause arrhythmia and many other health tissues. And for hyperphosphatemia, it always affect our body from absorbing enough calcium and thus cause a series of bone problems like bone pain, fracture of bone and osteoporosis.
5. Replenish necessary vitamin
Due to diet restriction, stage 4 kidney failure patients may be lack of vitamin, so trying to eat more fruits and vegetables to replenish necessary vitamin is very important.
