IgA Nephropathy, also can be called Berger's Disease is the most common form of glomerular disease. Glomerulus is just one of the part of our kidney and each kidney contains tens and thousands of glomeruli. The major symptom of IgA Nephropathy is hematuria which also can be commonly called blood urine.
Hematuria involves in red blood cell account in urine and it is diagnosed when red blood cell account is more than the reference value. However, what is the relationship between red blood cells in urine and IgA Nephropathy?
In our body there is a kind of immunoglobulin named IgA and for people with IgA Nephropathy, they can be find to have excessive IgA or IgA immune complexes in glomerular filtration membrane which is responsible for protecting red blood cells from being leaked. However, when our immune system is abnormal or when immunity is too low, harmful substances invade our body and in some instances,a large number of IgA will be secreted. IgA can combine with some antigen and therefore form IgA immune complexes. IgA and IgA immune complexes circulate with blood and when they deposit in glomerular filtration membrane, inflammation will be caused. Inflammation damage filtration membrane directly and when damaged glomerular filtration membrane fail to reserve red blood cells, red blood cell get out of our body with urine and thus form hematuria.
Hematuria can be clinically divided into two types: microscopical hematuria and gross hematuria. Just as their name imply, microscopical hematuria needs to be diagnosed with microscope and gross hematuria can be find with naked eyes.With hematuria, if IgA Nephropathy patients do not stop it effectively, much more red blood cells will be lost from urine. When red blood cell account in the blood is lower than the normal value, anemia will be caused. Therefore, it is of great importance for IgA Nephropathy patients to stop hematuria effectively.
